Sustainability and "Green" Initiatives

Novapak Corporation is committed to the education, investigation and implementation of technologies and business practices throughout the operations of the organization including the product life cycle to minimize the impact on the environment.

Education:
Novapak is committed to the ongoing awareness and education in sustainability and environmentally friendly solutions; this includes training of personnel, working with suppliers, subcontractors, service providers and other partners in business to keep abreast with customer strategies and expectations, industry trends, available technologies and opportunities for deployment.

Investigation and Implementation:
Novapak is constantly looking for technology to improve the conversion efficiency of plastic resins to bottles. Opportunities for recycling, raw material conservation and source reduction are all areas where environmentally friendly solutions have been implemented. As such, below is a partial list of the implemented solutions:

Solutions to reduce Energy demands:
1. Our PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) platform uses state of the art high cavity injection molding machines that use substantially less power per pound of PET resin converted to product compared to prior generation machines
2. We employ closed loop water systems in the manufacturing operations
3. We employ Automated / Robotic Packing systems
4. We use a compressed air system that automatically drains bleed-back into the system instead of blowing off air to the atmosphere with a variable speed drive motor that automatically adjusts to the load
5. We have installed new plant heating systems that use waste hydraulic oil from the blow molders for fuel
6. All our office facilities are illuminated with Fluorescent lighting
7. We employ thin client technology and architecture on our Wide Area Network (no PCs) that consume less electricity with server centric processing at one physical location
8. All our printers are networked and are used as a shared resource to minimize energy, paper and ink consumption

Solutions to promote Material Conservation and Recycling:

9. We promote active recycling programs in all facilities that enable segregation of waste
10. We offer gram weight reduction options for bottles manufactured in various resins to comply with CIWMB laws
11. We have deployed reduced thickness flange designs on PET preforms compared to industry standards to reduce container weight
12. We promote tray packaging with customer approval to reduce corrugate consumption
13. We have implemented packaging designs and solutions that cube the transportation trailer completely
14. We use plastic totes between our plants to reduce corrugate consumption
15. We promote eliminating plastic bags in the packaging of containers in cartons with customer approval
16. We manufacture PET containers with Post Consumer Regrind; 25% and higher as accepted and approved by customers
17. We manufacture PE (PolyEthylene) containers with Post Consumer Regrind; even in critical in-line Fluorinated applications using multi layer extrusion technology
18. We have deployed programs to consume process generated regrind in Extrusion Blow Molding operations; regrind that cannot be used is sold to recyclers
19. We have deployed programs to selectively feed manufacturing regrind in Injection Molding operations; regrind that cannot be used is sold to recyclers
20. We have an active Recycling program with corrugate that includes baling and selling to recyclers
21. We have document shredding contracts with reputed companies to ensure recycling

Options being investigated for the future:

1. Automatic timers for warehouse and office lighting fixtures
2. Alternate energy sources / energy credits
3. Office space consolidation
4. Reduction of printing needs
5. Bio-Resins (and Resin additives) being investigated as a commercial alternative to existing resins (or as an additive to existing resins) to promote faster biodegradability
